Here’s a general update on the activities of the new council and management committee over the last few months. We hope you find it informative.
… strategic plan a council sub-committee have commenced work on
an outline strategic plan for submission to the management committee and to council. This document is expected to set the groundwork for DanceSport to examine it role and activities into the future.
… mission statement one outcome of the early work of the strategic
planning committee has been a new draft “working title” for DSA’s mission statement …. this draft aims to more clearly state the aims and functions of DSA as a peak sporting body. National Council has agreed that the statement –
“To implement and maintain policies and procedures for the regulation, administration and promotion of DanceSport in Australia”
would become a “working” mission statement for the purposes of formulating the Strategic Plan.
… corporate
governance manual a review of the existing corporate governance
manual suggests that, whilst comprehensive, it is an unwieldy document that is too complex (and too long) for understanding by DSA’s general membership. We have commenced work on a more modern presentation and declaration that the new council intends to govern the organization according to a high standard, using the most up to date business principles.
…. risk management similarly, we have commenced a review of the
risks faced by DSA in operating in a modern environment. Early work suggests DSA is not unduly exposed, but that we need to again identify and evaluate individual risks, their possible impact on the organization, and establish an overall risk management policy to handle those risks.
… life memberships of DanceSport Australia were presented to
Vince Bain, DSA’s immediate past President, and Bob Courts, now senior advisor to DSA’s Accreditation Commission, at the Australian DanceSport Championships in Melbourne….for exceptional services to DanceSport Australia and the dance industry.
… web site/s the consolidation of DSA’s national web site and
that of the individual state branch sites has moved into a new phase. The national, NSW, Queensland, Tasmania and Victorian sites are now running on the same hosting site, with South Australia and Western Australia soon to follow. Two further stages will see the adoption of a common and modern design for each web site……providing easier access for all members.
… meetings a meetings schedule for National Council (who will
meet quarterly) and the Management Committee (who will meet monthly) has been agreed. The Council has met twice (in October and November), and the Management committee also twice (in November and December). In addition to those other matters referred to herein, some of the more important decisions have seen-
An acknowledgement of a need to investigate an easier pathway for Asian couples to compete in Australia, covered by Rule 8.6
Minimize cost of FOCUS distribution, by utilizing modern technology and forwarding Focus via email to those members who have provided their email addresses with their DSA registrations (about 50% of members). The November 2009 issue of the newsletter was the first to be distributed in this manner.
… letters of appreciation have been sent to all outgoing national
councilors and members of the previous management committee. The letters said in part ………………”The new Council of DanceSport Australia (DSA) wish to make it known and to place on record their utmost appreciation of the work, effort and contribution made by you as…… during your tenure. DSA has traveled an enormous distance in the last ten plus years since its foundation and is now the voice for the industry in Australia. The organization is a powerful force in international affairs, and is deeply involved in the world wide development of our sport.”
… contact directory a new contact directory detailing the names,
phone numbers, home and e-mail addresses
of all new members of the national council and management committee has been prepared and distributed via email. The updated directory is also accessible via the DSA web site.
… rule changes a number of changes intended to make some
of DSA’s rules more user friendly are
being debated and will move forward through the Rules Commission and National Council. These are -
The use of Invigilators - a letter has been sent to State Branches to set out the application of Rule 21.12, and to encourage the use of Invigilators; this included advice of the latest revision to Rule 21.12 which makes the use of an Invigilator mandatory at Championships.
Alteration to the “reasonable relaxation of hold” rule for New Vogue. – it is being proposed that the rule would be amended to read -
In Open Events for Youth, Masters I, Masters II and professional, variations to the written holds from the endorsed publications are acceptable. The technique (i.e. alignment, timing, positions of feet, amount of turn etc) must be maintained in all instances”.
Elevation marks for Levels 1 and 2 - An amendment to Rule 13.1 (b) is being proposed viz;
”That for Levels 1 and 2 only, granting 2 points (boxes) for a competition win, and 3 points (Boxes) for a championship win”
Graded couples winning open events presently cannot have that win recorded with elevation points. The following amendment to rule 13.2 is proposed –
after the first sentence, the following would be added...........””Wins in all Open Events are optional to count for elevation points”
… International Events in addition to the Asian Pacific DanceSport
Championship. to be held in conjunction with the Australian DanceSport Championships in December, 2011, DSA and ADS are jointly bidding for the rights to conduct the 2012 IDSF World Standard Championship.
A full update on the progress of the Asian Pacific and the World Standard bid will be given at the February 19th National Council Teleconference.
